What Is Unstructured Data?

Unstructured data is information that does not have a predefined data model or organization, such as free-form text, images, video, or audio.

Why unstructured data is hard to use

Because it lacks a fixed schema, unstructured data can’t be directly queried or analyzed the way a spreadsheet can. It typically needs to be parsed, tagged, or transformed into structured fields before it becomes usable for reporting or model training.

Where it shows up in web data

A raw scraped web page is a form of unstructured data until it’s parsed into distinct fields like title, price, and description. AI training pipelines also consume large volumes of unstructured text and images that require cleaning and annotation.
