What Is Data Mining?

Data mining is the process of discovering patterns, correlations, and useful information within large datasets, typically using statistical and machine learning methods.

Data mining vs. data extraction

Data extraction is about pulling raw data out of a source. Data mining happens afterward — it analyzes the collected data to find trends, clusters, or predictive patterns, such as identifying which competitor price changes precede a demand shift.

Applications

Common applications include market basket analysis, customer segmentation, fraud detection, and trend forecasting, often built on top of large web-scraped or transactional datasets.
